What is the Residence Permit?

The residence permit is a permit that gives foreigners the right to stay in Turkey. Foreigners other than foreigners who are exempt from a residence permit are required to obtain a residence permit for foreigners who will stay in Turkey for more than the period provided for by the visa or visa exemption, or for ninety days.

Who is Exempt from the Residence Permit? Who Does Not Have to Acquire the Residence Permit?

  • Under the Settlement Law , those who have an Immigrant Certificate are exempt from obtaining a residence permit.
  • People who have a Temporary Protection Identity Document are not required to obtain a residence permit.

Where and How Can I Apply for the Residence Permit?

The application for the residence permit can be obtained from the Turkish Consulate in your country of residence, the Provincial Immigration Authority or the Governorates if you are located in Turkey, or ‘’https://e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr /’’ it can be done via this website.

If you are not required to acquire the residence permit or do not have an exemption, the first thing you need to do to apply for the residence permit will be to decide which type of residence you will be applying for.

Residence permit applications to be made to the governorates within Turkey must be made before the legal period required for the application has expired.

1. Short-Term Residence Permit

What is the Short-Term Residence Permit?

It is possible for foreigners who are married to a Turkish citizen and have derived the family residence permit to apply for the short-term residence permit if they are divorced, and if they have stayed in Turkey for three years. If they actualize the conditions, they can also apply for other residence permits. However, if these people are divorced due to domestic violence, they can obtain the short-term residence permit without the requirement of three years.

If the promoter dies, people with the family residence permit can utilize this residence permit until it expires.

The monthly income of the promoter is calculated on the family residence permit. The promoter is expected to cover the costs of people applying for the family residence permit.

If foreigners apply for the family residence permit, the promoter must also submit some information and documents to the Governor’s Office where they reside. Otherwise, the family residence application will not be put into process.

Revocation of the Family Residence Permit

4. Student Residence Permit

Foreigners who will study for an associate degree, bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or doctoral degree at an academy in Turkey and foreigners who will study at primary and secondary level who do not have the family residence permit are required to derive the student residence permit.

People who are going to study in primary and secondary schools are granted the residence permit for up to a maximum of one year, valid from the date of commencement of education until the beginning of the next academic year.

People who are going to study at an academy may be granted the residence permit from the date of applying for the residence permit to cover the entire educational program. If a student can not graduate within the normal period of study, the residence permit is extended for periods of no more than one year and not exceeding the maximum period of study.

If the student graduates, the student residence permit is deducted based on the date of graduation.

Foreigners with the student residence permit can be the promoter of their partners and children on the family residence permit.

If the student’s study period at the institution where he/she is studying is less than one year, the student residence permit may be the same as the study period.

If the institution where the study will be held directs the prospective student primarily to the Turkish preparatory class or courses, these students are also derived the student residence permit until the beginning of the next semester.

The Right to Work of Master’s and Doctoral Students who Have Derived the Student Residence Permit

Foreigners who have a master’s or doctoral degree in Turkey and have the student residence permit can derive the work permit and work.

Revocation of the Student Residence Permit

If a decision has been made to deport or ban entry to Turkey for people who have obtained a valid student residence permit in Turkey, if it becomes clear that the conditions sought for the student residence permit have disappeared or it will not be possible for him to continue his studies, if it is understood that the student uses the residence permit for different purposes, the residence permit is canceled.

5. Humanitarian Residence Permit

The humanitarian residence permit is initiated at the request of the Governorates or the General Directorate of Citizenship. People who have acquired the humanitarian residence permit must register in the address registration system no later than twenty working days.

People who have been acquired the humanitarian residence permit can also apply for other residence permits if they have the required qualifications.

6. Residence Permit for Victims of Human Trafficking

These applications can also be made through the legal representative of the foreigner or his/her lawyer with a power of attorney. It is not possible to obtain the residence permit through people who are not lawyers.

The residence permit application document is issued to foreigners who have applied for the residence permit or applied for an extension of the residence permit. The residence permit application document provides the right to stay in Turkey until the application is completed.

Applications for the extension of the residence permit must be submitted to the governorates starting from sixty days before the expiration of the residence permit and in any case before the expiration of the residence permit. The extended residence permit will start from the date of expiration of the previous permit period.

Need to Know About Residence Permit Applications
